Following a delayed kickoff, the girls finally got started in the next round of the national cup, against a formidable Holycross team.
In the first half, both sides got their chances, with Lily Scannell hitting the crossbar after 10 mins.
At half-time, the sides were still 0-0, with Holycross putting on pressure on the Sullane side.
With 5 minutes into the second half, a clever pass by Lily Scannell set up Aisling Kelleher with a fantastic top-corner finish, giving Sullane the lead. However, soon after Holycross came roaring back and equalised with a brilliant 30-yard free kick.
With time ticking by, the sides finished FT at 1-1, with extra time to be played.
During the first half of extra time, both teams were cautious with plenty of chances and still 1-1.
The second half of extra time saw a fantastic run and finish from Holycross to make it 2-1. All seemed lost, with only a few minutes left to play, Lily Scannell equalised with a breathtaking goal, taking this match to a penalty shootout.
Some great kicks and saves from both teams, however, it was to be Sullane’s day with Rionach white scoring the winning goal in sudden death, and a fantastic performance by Abbie Scanlon in goals.
A huge thank you to Holycross for welcoming us today and for a hard-fought match. The Holycross Girls were fantastic today and never gave up until the end.
